<abstract>DTS has been maintaining the County-wide street centerline (i.e. single line) geographic database for over two decades. Each street segment is assigned a street name, a street prefix and suffix, a street type, and an address and zip code range. Consequently, this file is used for address matching, intersection matching, and geododing data tables with address information. Originally, DTS, then known as DIST, maintained the GBF/DIME file, a geographic base file created using the dual independent map encoding technology. GBF/DIME files were first created in the mid-70?s for the metropolitan areas of the country. It was used by the U.S. Census Bureau to assign (geocode) the census questionnaires to their corresponding Census Tracts, Block Groups, and Blocks. During the 1980?s the Census Bureau enhanced and expanded the GBF/DIME system to cover the whole country. The new geographic database system is dubbed as TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) system. Using the Arc/Info GIS software, DTS enhanced the County GBF/DIME to a level surpassing TIGER. DTS used the Maryland State Highway Administration?s Grid Map (single line roadway database) as the base to cartographically (and spatially) enhance the coordinate values of the DIME file. Some 44,000 shape points were added to the 41,000 street segment database. As a result, a spatially accurate (at 1"=2,000? scale) and cartographically pleasing street centerlines file was generated (TIGER mapping scale was 1"=8,333? with lower level of spatial accuracy). Since 2000, DTS staff has improved the accuracy of the street centerlines file from 1:24000 to 1:2400.</abstract>
